How to Avoid a Deck Collapse

Homeowners in New Jersey know that deck maintenance is important for an ideal outdoor living area. But did you know that having a deck that isn’t structurally sound can be a hazard? In the U.S., more than 500 people are injured from accidental deck collapses each year.

Protect your family and look for these signs to avoid having your deck collapse.

Nails sticking out

Exposed nails coming from your deck can be a bad thing. Nails can pull away from the decking structure and lead the whole system to eventually collapse.

Rotting/splintering wood

Rotting wood is among the worse signs that your deck needs help. If the wood is rotted, there’s a large chance that it will rip itself from the main house.  Check where stair stringers come in contact with the ground or landing pad. Also, be sure to look around railing posts and the decking surface.

Unstable ledger

The ledger, the framing material that attaches the deck to your house, should be attached with lag screws, not nails. If the the ledger is attached with nails, then it’s time for repairs.

Unsteady railing

Wobbly deck railing is no joke. The purpose of a railing is to be firm and secure around your deck. Be careful not to kick it or lean on it to see whether the railing will give way.

Cracks in decking board

Although cracks tend to be more of a headache than a structural issue, they eventually will cause larger damage to your deck.

Corroded hardware

You might be able to tell the condition of your deck by looking at its hardware. Be sure to inspect all fasteners, bolts, joist hangers and other hardware for signs of rust or corrosion.

At Carl’s, we recommend having your deck professionally inspected when it’s 10 years old and then every three years after that. Contact us at 1-855-By-Carls to have your deck inspected today!
